An AirPenguin

Meet the makers of the marvellous mechanical Festo AirPenguins and AirJelly.

Penguins are fascinating creatures that, over the course of their evolutionary development as marine birds, have lost the ability to fly. With Festo AirPenguins and AirJelly, engineers have created artificial penguins and jellyfish that 'fly' through the air, twisting and turning almost as gracefully as their living counterparts. Using helium-filled balloons, fibre rods and rigid 3D bionic Fin Ray® geometrical structures, these remarkable bionic creatures are remote-controlled or can fly freely within a defined air space without crashing into each other.

Futuristic projects like AirPenguins and AirJelly highlight the increasing significance of industrial automation as they allow engineers to investigate autonomous, versatile and adaptive self-regulating processes. Developed by Festo, a worldwide leading supplier of pneumatic and electrical automation technology.
