A genuine sci-fi classic that crackles with a sense of post-war, anti-communist paranoia. Siegel's film has been interpreted as a metaphor for the tyranny of the McCarthy era and the attendant Hollywood blacklist, though this has been denied by Siegel and the writer of the original novel, Jack Finney. Intended or not, the film is imbued with the ominous shadow of the atomic bomb and fear of loss of identity within modern mass society.
